How much is my scrap car worth in the UK?
A scrap car value starts from its weight at the current scrap metal price, then rises with anything still worth reusing: a working engine or gearbox, an intact catalytic converter, straight panels in a common colour, good alloys and a car that still drives. Location matters too, because collection cost comes out of the offer.
- Baseline is weight multiplied by the current scrap metal price
- A running engine or gearbox is worth far more than its metal
- The catalytic converter can be a large share of the total
- Straight panels in a common colour add real value
- A car that still drives loads more cheaply, so it pays more
- Collection distance comes out of your offer
- Never accept cash — it has been illegal in England since 2013
“What is my scrap car worth?” has no single answer, because two identical-looking cars can be worth very different amounts. What decides it is not the age or the MOT — it is what is still reusable.
The floor: weight and metal price
Every end-of-life vehicle is worth at least its weight in metal, and scrap metal prices move constantly. A small hatchback and a large 4x4 differ substantially on weight alone. This is the number a pure metal recycler is working from, and it is the lowest sensible offer you should accept.
What lifts it above the floor
- A running engine and gearbox. By far the biggest single factor. A working drivetrain is worth many times its scrap weight, which is why a car with a blown clutch is worth more than one with a seized engine.
- The catalytic converter. Its value comes from the metals inside, so it varies enormously by model — on some cars it is a significant share of the whole offer.
- Straight panels in a common colour. Doors, bonnets and tailgates that can be resold as-is beat panels that only make metal.
- Wheels, lights and electronics. Alloys as a set, undamaged light units and working control modules all add up.
- Whether it still drives. A car that can be driven onto a transporter costs less to collect, and that saving shows up in your offer.
What lowers it
Fire and flood damage, a seized or blown engine, missing wheels, a missing catalytic converter, and being a long way from the buyer. Distance is the one people forget: collection is a real cost, and it comes out of the price rather than being added to it.
Scrap it, or break it?
If the car has genuinely valuable parts still on it and you have the space, time and tools, breaking it yourself returns more. If you do not, selling it whole to a buyer who will break it captures some of that value without you doing the work. Our side-by-side comparison sets out the return, effort and risk of each.
The legal bits, briefly
Cash payment for scrap vehicles has been illegal in England and Wales since 2013 — payment must be by bank transfer or cheque, so a buyer offering cash is a buyer to walk away from. The vehicle must go to an Authorised Treatment Facility, you should receive a Certificate of Destruction, and you must tell the DVLA the vehicle has been scrapped or you stay liable for it. Take the number plates and your belongings out first.
Getting a realistic figure
Have the registration, the rough mileage and an honest description of what works ready. Say plainly if the engine is seized or the cat is missing — a buyer will find out at collection, and an offer revised downwards on the driveway helps nobody. We buy end-of-life vehicles, salvage cars and scrap lots across the UK: see scrap my car for what we pay for and how collection works, or send us the registration for a figure.

Everything you need to know about buying, selling and shipping car parts with LJ Auto.
How much is a scrap car worth in the UK?
It starts from the vehicle weight at the current scrap metal price and rises with anything still reusable — a working engine or gearbox, an intact catalytic converter, straight panels and good alloys. Collection distance is deducted from the offer.
Is it illegal to be paid cash for a scrap car?
Yes, in England and Wales. Since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 payment must be made by bank transfer or cheque. A buyer offering cash for a scrap vehicle is one to avoid.
Do I need to tell the DVLA I have scrapped my car?
Yes. The vehicle must go to an Authorised Treatment Facility, you should receive a Certificate of Destruction, and you must notify the DVLA — otherwise you remain liable for the vehicle.
Is my car worth more scrapped or broken for parts?
Broken for parts, if it still has valuable components and you have the space, time and tools. If not, selling it whole to a buyer who will break it captures part of that value without the labour.
